# Addiction Details

This page is for those who would like to understand how Addiction works in Dark Future under the hood. Reading this page is not necessary in order to enjoy the mod.

When consuming an addictive substance, a random die roll is made against the <mark style="color:yellow;">**Progression Chance**</mark> for that substance. If the roll is successful, you gain points of <mark style="color:yellow;">**Addiction Progress**</mark>. This die roll happens behind the scenes.

Once Addiction Progress has reached the required amount for the next addiction stage, you advance to that stage.

<mark style="color:yellow;">**Addiction Progress is lost over time.**</mark> This allows for (very) occasional use of certain substances without ever becoming addicted.

## <mark style="color:yellow;">Alcohol Addiction</mark>

The default <mark style="color:yellow;">**Addiction Progression Chance**</mark> of Alcohol is <mark style="color:yellow;">**50%**</mark>.&#x20;

Each time the addiction progress advances, it progresses by <mark style="color:yellow;">**1 point**</mark>.

The default <mark style="color:yellow;">**Addiction Progress Loss**</mark> per in-game day is <mark style="color:yellow;">**2 points**</mark>.

> **Example**: You drink 3 alcoholic drinks. Behind the scenes, the mod rolls 33, 67, and 92. The first drink does not count toward addiction. The second and third drinks do, and each progress your addiction by 1 point. You now have an Addiction Progress of 2 points for Alcohol.
>
> You then continue to play the game. After an in-game day (24 in-game hours), your Alcohol Addiction Progress has been reset to 0, because the Addiction Progress Loss per day is 2.

The default <mark style="color:yellow;">**Addiction Progression Chance**</mark> of Nicotine is <mark style="color:yellow;">**85%**</mark>.&#x20;

Each time the addiction progress advances, it progresses by <mark style="color:yellow;">**1 point**</mark>.

The default <mark style="color:yellow;">**Addiction Progress Loss**</mark> per in-game day is <mark style="color:yellow;">**1 point**</mark>.

This addiction is gained from consuming narcotics like Mr. Whitey, Black Lace, [Glitter](/consumables.md#glitter), and [Emergency Cardioregulator](/consumables.md#emergency-cardioregulator).

The default <mark style="color:yellow;">**Addiction Progression Chance**</mark> of Nicotine is <mark style="color:yellow;">**85%**</mark>.&#x20;

Each time the addiction progress advances, it progresses by <mark style="color:yellow;">**1 point**</mark> for "normal" narcotics like Mr. Whitey.

It progresses by <mark style="color:yellow;">2</mark> <mark style="color:yellow;"></mark><mark style="color:yellow;">**points**</mark> for "potent" narcotics like Black Lace, Glitter, and Emergency Cardioregulator.

The default <mark style="color:yellow;">**Addiction Progress Loss**</mark> per in-game day is <mark style="color:yellow;">**0.5 points**</mark>.
